Course Description

VMware NSX is flexible with regard to the underlying network fabric, but there are a number of significant advantages in different network environments. This course covers the benefits of running VMware NSX over physical network fabrics, and the requirements for doing so. This course is one of a series of Skillsoft courses that cover the objectives for VMware certification exam VCA-NV: VMware Certified Professional Network Virtualization.

Learning Objectives

Physical Network Fabrics

  • start the course
  • describe common physical network topologies, including layer 2 fabric, multi-tier, and leaf-spine
  • describe trends in physical networks
  • describe the purpose of a leaf node and a spine node in leaf-spine architecture
  • identify virtual network topologies, including enterprise, service provider multi-tenant, and multi-tenant scalable
  • describe the benefits of a multi-instance TCP/IP stack
  • describe the challenges of a layer 2 fabric topology
  • describe the challenges of a multi-tier topology
  • describe the challenges of a leaf-spine topology
  • differentiate between physical and virtual QoS implementation
  • differentiate between single and multiple vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) Distributed Logical Router implementations
  • differentiate between NSX Edge High Availability and Scale-out NSX Edge High Availability implementations
  • differentiate between collapsed and separate vSphere cluster topologies
  • differentiate between layer 3 and converged cluster infrastructures

Physical Infrastructure Requirements

  • identify VMware NSX management and edge cluster requirements
  • describe minimum and optimal physical infrastructure requirements for a VMware NSX implementation
  • describe how different traffic types are handled in a physical infrastructure
  • determine use cases for available virtual architectures
  • differentiate between virtual and physical switch connection methods
  • describe VMkernel networking recommendations

Practice: Running NSX on Fabrics

  • describe challenges of physical networks and requirements for VMware NSX
