Cybersecurity Education and Training Opportunities for Veterans

Our nation’s veterans are one of our most valued and cherished assets.  Every November 11th, we honor and remember their sacrifices and commitment to this country.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is helping America's military veterans join our nation’s cybersecurity workforce. Veterans bring a unique understanding of defense tactics and exposure to team environments that may make them well suited for cybersecurity careers. NICCS provides extensive information and access to opportunities to help educate and train tomorrow’s cybersecurity workforce.  Many of these resources are listed in our Veterans Cybersecurity Education and Training Guide and Veterans Cybersecurity Education and Training Toolkit.

The Veterans Guide provides an introduction to cybersecurity, detailing how to assess, prepare, and engage a new career in cybersecurity. The Veterans Toolkit provides an array of useful resources for organizations to promote cybersecurity careers with their veteran members.

Many of the resources can be found via the NICCS website. FedVTE (Federal Virtual Training Environment), CyberCorps®: Scholarship for Service (SFS), and National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) are all useful training and education opportunities for veterans. For example, FedVTE provides free cybersecurity training and certification prep courses for all experience levels. Beginners can start with CompTIA Security+ (SY0-401) Certification Prep which prepares the student to take the Security+ certification exam, a good first step in a cybersecurity career path. More experienced cybersecurity professionals can prepare for advanced certifications like the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

These resources were featured in an August post on Vantage Point, the Official Blog of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:

To date, over 15,000 veterans have enrolled in FedVTE!
